The program
What is Pathway to Research?
A new Massachusetts nonprofit that exists to make research accessible to all. Students lead original research on questions that matter in their own communities, with mentors who come from the same background.
What would I actually do?
Work in a small team through a full research cycle: choose a question your community actually cares about, pick your methods, gather and analyze evidence, then publish and present what you found.
Do I need research experience?
No. Curiosity is the requirement. The program teaches everything else.
When does it start?
The first cohort is planned for summer 2027, running about six to seven weeks. Applications are not open yet; the interest list hears first.
When do applications open?
December 2026, due January 2027, with decisions by March 2027. The interest list hears first.
Who can join
Who is this for?
First-generation and low-income young people in Massachusetts, from high school through college age, roughly 14 to 24.
Do you ask about immigration status?
No. Immigration status is never a barrier to participation, and we never ask for it. That is a commitment, not a slogan; it is written into our privacy commitment.
I am in college. Am I too old?
Not necessarily. The program is built for high school and college-age students, because college students can also lack access to research opportunities.
Money
Does it cost anything?
No. There is no fee and there will never be a paid tier.
Is it true I would get paid?
That is the plan: the pilot is designed as a paid summer program, so joining never means giving up a summer income. Exact pay details will be published when applications open.
Parents and educators
How do I support a student who wants to join?
Join the interest list on their behalf, or email us. When applications open we will hold info sessions for families.
Can my school or organization partner with you?
Yes, we are actively looking for schools, community organizations, and researchers who can host, mentor, or co-design. See get involved.
